AZ recorded a 12th win from 16 matches this season after a comprehensive 4-0 victory at home over De Graafschap.
The highly-rated Adam Maher set AZ on their way with the opening goal midway through the first half and Simon Poulsen, who is poised to leave at the end of the season, added the second just past the half-hour mark.
Vito Wormgoor's own goal made it 3-0 on 54 minutes and substitute Charlison Benschop rounded off the scoring with 12 minutes left.
PSV stayed four points adrift of AZ after scrapping for a 1-0 success at home to mid-table NAC Breda.
Dries Mertens scored the only goal on 17 minutes, while PSV had substitute Jeremain Lens sent off in injury-time for two bookable offences.
Twente, who have lost just once this season, are staying in the fight for the title after a 2-0 home success over NEC Nijmegen.
Luuk de Jong made the breakthrough for Twente on 57 minutes and Nacer Chadli's 73rd minute goal put the game beyond NEC.
Bas Dost produced a stunning individual performance by scoring all five goals in Heerenveen's emphatic 5-0 success at lowly Excelsior.
Dost scored twice inside the opening 20 minutes and completed his hat-trick before half-time, and then added further goals on 58 and 66 minutes.
