AZ Alkmaar midfielder Maarten Martens has undergone a successful operation on his ankle, the Eredivisie club have confirmed.
The Belgian went under the knife on Tuesday to correct an ankle problem which has persistently troubled the 27-year-old.
Alkmaar confirmed on their official website: "Maarten Martens underwent a successful operation on his ankle in Amsterdam on Tuesday morning.
"The recovery time after this operation is just a few weeks."
Martens lamented the timing of the surgery, admitting he had hoped it could wait until January.
"It sucks that it happened now," he told Voetbal Primeur. "I was hoping the operation could wait until the winter break, but it couldn't."
