Groningen have expressed delight at wrapping up the capture of Martijn Meerdink.
The midfielder had been deemed surplus to requirements at AZ Alkmaar, but his hopes of a move during January appeared slim as his club wanted a sizeable transfer fee.
However, AZ lowered their demands in the final week of the transfer window and this allowed the midfielder to sign a deal until the summer of 2010 with Groningen.
"He has taken a drop on his contract, which shows how much he wanted to play for us," said Groningen's general director Hans Nijland.
"We have been after a player like Meerdink for a long time and he can strengthen us."
Stefano Seedorf has moved on from Groningen after signing a deal with Apollon Limassol.
The 24-year-old midfielder has signed a deal until the end of the season."
