AZ Alkmaar climbed up to second in the Eredivisie with a 3-1 victory over struggling ADO Den Haag.

David Mendes da Silva opened the scoring for AZ with a penalty on the stroke of half-time, before Danny Koevermans (pictured) doubled their advantage after 57 minutes.

Aleksander Rankovic pulled a goal back for ADO after 72 minutes but any hopes of a late comeback were snuffed out as Maarten Martens struck after 86 minutes.

Rankovic was then sent off for deliberate handball one minute from time to finish off a miserable night for ADO.

ADO will sink to the bottom of the table on Saturday if RKC Waalwijk collect a point at home to Twente.
