FEYENOORD closed the gap on the top two in De Eredivise with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Heerenveen at De Kuip, with Pierre van Hooijdonk helping himself to a second half hat-trick.

Feyenoord took the lead after just ten minutes when Thomas Buffel struck, but they had to wait until the second period before extending their lead.

Fantastic youngster Robin van Persie doubled their advantage after 49 minutes and then van Hooijdonk (57) added his name to the scoresheet.

The former Celtic star (pictured) grabbed his second just four minutes later, before he completed his treble from the penalty spot on 67 minutes.

RKC Waalwijk went down to a shock 2-1 loss at FC Twente, but the fact that they finished the game with nine-men seemed to play a major part.

Jochen Janssen put RKC in-front after 16 minutes, but Thijs Houwing levelled matters just before half time.

Yuri Nikiforov was dismissed just before the hour mark and then Twente grabbed victory in the last minute through Sjaak Polak.

RKC were then reduced further in numbers when Robert Fuchs was given his marching orders.

AZ Alkmaar sealed a comfortable 3-1 win over De Graafschap.
