AJAX missed out on the chance to pull away from PSV Eindhoven after being held to a 1-1 draw at the hands of De Graafschap.

Egyptian striker Mido looked to have set the league leaguers on course for a win after a goal on 17 minutes, however Dave Zafarin equalised moments after half-time.

The Amsterdam club's frustration was shown when goal-scorer Mido was sent-off late on. The result moves De Graafschap level on points with Groningen at the foot of the table.

Elsewhere, Willem II boosted their European prospects with a home 3-1 win over fellow Euro hopefuls AZ Alkmaar.

James Quinn fired the home side ahead on 21 minutes, and the visitors hopes of getting anything from the contest was hindered when Tim de Cler was sent off shortly after the interval after he conceded a penalty.

Denny Landzaat had no problems despatching the spot-kick making it 2-0 on 49 minutes.

The ten men would pull a goal back on 69 minutes through Martijn Meerdink, however Dmitri Sjoekov settled matters with a late third.

Heerenveen boosted their prospects of avoiding the drop with a stunning 3-1 home win over title challengers Feyenoord.

It had looked good for the visitors shortly into the second half when Belgium winger Thomas Buffel fired The Rotterdam side ahead, but Mike Vayrinen equalised moments later.

Romano Denneboom then put the home side ahead for the first time just seven minutes later, before Finnish star Mika Nurmela completed the win with a late goal.
