AJAX have been left reeling by the news that keeper Bogdan Lobont will be out until the start of next year, prompting them to consider a raid on AZ Alkmaar for Henk Timmer.

Exploratory tests on Lobont`s shoulder revealed extensive damage that will require surgery and a four-month rest period, leaving Ajax desperately short of goalkeeping cover.

Joe Didulica has an ankle injury, Fred Grim decided not to come out of retirement, leaving coach Ronald Koeman with only Maarten Stekelenburg as an option for the first-team.

Koeman and Leo Beenhakker held a crisis meeting and decided a raid on the transfer market was the only sensible option.

Timmer was eventually decided on as their favoured option and technical director Beenhakker contacted AZ about the keeper.

The 30-year-old Timmer is looking to secure a transfer, after seeing Feyenoord decide not to turn his loan spell at De Kuip into a permanent arrangement, and could be receptive to a move to the Amsterdam ArenA.

The one stumbling block is that Ajax would prefer to bring in a keeper on loan, due to them having three quality keepers when all are fit, and it is not known how Timmer will feel about a temporary switch after his experience with Feyenoord last term.

A possible swap deal has also been mooted, with Ajax reportedly ready to offer Cedric van der Gun in part exchange after the midfielder turned down the chance to move to RBC Roosendaal, as the wage bill would not be added to by such an agreement.

RBC`s Paul van der Kraan said: "He wanted extra time to see if some other team came in for him. That suggests that he is not committed to joining us; we only want players who want to play for us."

Van der Gun is surplus to requirements at Ajax, but the thought of a move to AZ could be similarly unappealing for a player who was once courted by Juventus before injury hampered his progress.
