Steve McClaren: Could be set for a return to Holland

Sky Bet

Steve McClaren is on a shortlist of candidates for the vacant coaching role at FC Twente - but a return to the Dutch club is not guaranteed.

Co Adriaanse, 64, has been sacked despite Twente being third in the Eredivisie, after having lost their last three matches of 2011.

The return of McClaren would be a popular move given that the former England boss led Twente to their first ever Eredivisie title back in 2010 before leaving to take charge of Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

However, chairman Joop Munsterman has confirmed the club are still considering several names to fill the post.

"His (McClaren's) appointment is still uncertain, as we will hold discussions in the next few days," Munsterman told a press conference, in comments reported by Voetbal International.

"We have a list of three candidates, two of whom are Dutch. On the list of applicants is also an alternative for Steve McClaren: Erwin Koeman. Fred Rutten is not on the list."

It is understood that McClaren is looking to get back into management and would see a return to Holland as an attractive option.

He has endured a difficult time since leaving Twente. After being sacked by Wolfsburg less than a year into his spell there, McClaren's most recent appointment at Nottingham Forest ended with his resignation in October just months into a three-year deal.

Any decision on the new appointment is unlikely to be rushed with Munsterman happy to leave the team in the hands of Adriaanse's assistants in the short term.
