Ajax have been dealt a blow with the news defender Toby Alderweireld could miss the remainder of the Eredivisie season.
The 22-year-old picked up a thigh injury while on international duty with Belgium against Austria last Friday and scans have revealed the centre-back will be sidelined for up to six weeks.
Alderweireld has played a key role for the Godenzonen this season in their bid for title success and his injury comes as an untimely setback.
A statement on the club's official website read: "Toby Alderweireld has a strained muscle in his right thigh.
"It was initially feared that he suffered a muscle tear but tests later revealed only a strain.
"The player will miss four to six weeks and is now back in Amsterdam."
Frank De Boer's side, who are currently six points behind title rivals PSV in the table, take on Heracles Almelo at the Amsterdam Arena on Sunday.
