Veteran defender wants more chances on the pitch

AZ Alkmaar defender Kew Jaliens says he is hungry for more action this season after being restricted to a bit-part role. The 32-year-old veteran, who arrived at the Eredivisie club from Willem II six years ago, has failed to win himself a regular spot in the first-team this term due to intense competition at the AZ Stadion And Jaliens, who has made just two league starts this campaign, has urged coach Gertjan Verbeek to award him more playing time so he can prove himself as a valuable member of the squad. When asked if he had accepted his current minor role, Jaliens told AZ's official website: "No, I'm still competitive. "I know I can handle the level. I can only show the coach if I can play."

Fitness

Despite not establishing himself as a regular starter this season, Jaliens says he strives to maintain match-fitness in case he is called on as a replacement. "I know I do not start every match from the beginning," he added. "Yet I am constantly looking to focus and stay fit. If anyone is suspended or injured, I'm ready. "It's already happened quite often this season that I was there to support."
