Groningen are waiting to discover if Oluwafemi Ajilore will be available to face RKC Waalwijk after the midfielder sustained a back injury while on international duty.
The Nigeria player picked up the problem in last Saturday's World Cup qualifying victory over Kenya and is now a doubt for this weekend's Eredivisie trip to RKC.
Ajilore has undergone a scan and the results have been passed to Groningen's medical team for further examination.
But it is not yet known if the 24-year-old will pass a fitness test after missing a midweek training session.
"Nigeria immediately scanned my back and I have presented our club doctor with a copy of the scan," he told Groningen's official website.
"They will now assess the seriousness of the situation in Holland.
"I still have problems with my back, especially when I want to run hard. I therefore decided not to train on Wednesday.
"I hope that it will all be easy and I will soon be able to play again for Groningen."
