The former England boss brought De Jong to his former club FC Twente as a teenager in 2009 and the player proved to be prolific in front of goal.
He then made a big-money move to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012 but struggled to make an impact at the Bundesliga club.
Magpies manager Alan Pardew signed the 23-year-old Holland international for the rest of the season with an option to buy in the summer.
But McClaren has warned Pardew he must be patient with De Jong if he wants to get the best out of him.
"How will he do in England? Who knows?," the Derby County boss told the Daily Express.
"It's a very tough league to score goals in and only the best do it on a regular basis, but Luuk is a very good player who will give it his best.
"He is talented and he loves scoring goals, so I think he will do very well, but he will be lacking in match fitness as he has been on the sidelines at Borussia.
"It just didn't work out for him there - that can happen - but that's not to say it won't work for him in England because his style is more suited to English football."
