Borussia Monchengladbach striker Luuk de Jong remains Newcastle United's top transfer target in January, Sky Sports understands.
Sky Sports revealed Newcastle's interest in landing the Dutch international on loan, and the two clubs have held talks.
We are told the main obstacle is whether cover is brought in by Monchengladbach to let him go, but Newcastle do expect the deal to happen.
It is understood his representatives will hold further talks about his future with Monchengladbach, as they hope to help push the deal along.
Despite De Jong's probable arrival, Newcastle are not believed to be looking to let Papiss Cisse, who had been the subject of interest from the Middle East, move on.
