Fourth division club Holstein Kiel continued their giant-killing run in the German Cup, knocking out Bundesliga boys Mainz to reach the last eight.
Having already beaten sides from two divisions above in the previous rounds, Kiel dumped out their top-tier opponents thanks to a goal in each half.
They took the lead after just six minutes when Mainz's Anthony Ujah headed a corner into his own net, then doubled their advantage shortly after the hour mark when Steve Muller fired in at the far post.
Schalke's hopes of retaining the trophy they won last season came to a disappointing end as they were beaten 3-1 by Borussia Monchengladbach.
To make the defeat even worse for the reigning champions they finished the tie with only nine men, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar seeing red in the first minute of the second half for dissent before Jermaine Jones was given his marching orders in injury time.
Reus double
Marco Reus struck twice for the hosts having already had a hand in his side's opening goal, the youngster's cross being deflected out to Juan Arango, who drilled in a left-foot shot in from the edge of the box.
An error by goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen allowed Julian Draxler to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes to play, but Reus ruined Schalke's hopes of a comeback by completing his brace in the closing stages.
Stuttgart made it through to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Hamburg, who suffered a first defeat under the leadership of new coach Thorsten Fink.
Striker Cacau got both of Stuttgart's goals to set up a showdown with Bayern Munich in the next round.
Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin are also through after a hard-fought 3-1 triumph over Kaiserslautern.
With assistant coach Rainer Widmayer in temporary charge after the recent sacking of Markus Babbel, Hertha hit the front just before the break when Adrian Ramos found the net.
Kaiserslautern responded six minutes after the restart with Itay Shechter levelling matters - only for their opponents to go back in front on the hour through Pierre-Michel Lasoggad.
After Schechter had wasted a glorious opportunity to make it two apiece, Hertha clinched the win in stoppage time with a goal from Patrick Ebert.
