Borussia Monchengladbach and Benfica are both reportedly keen to land Greek international Konstantinos Katsouranis.
The 26-year-old is expected to leave AEK Athens this summer, despite still having a year remaining on his current deal.
Gladbach appeared to be in pole position to land the midfielder but Portuguese giants Benfica are ready to make a é¼2 million (£1.4 million) bid in order to land their man.
"We know about the danger [of missing out on the signing], but we are not prepared to change our original planning," said Gladbach director of sport Peter Pander, who will likely look elsewhere if he fails to sign Katsouranis.
The Foals are determined to strengthen in a bid to push for a European place next season and another player possibly within the sights of the German outfit is Boca Juniors playmaker Federico Insua.
The 26-year-old is ready to leave the Buenos Aires giants for a spell in Europe and his club appear ready to let him go for a transfer fee of é¼5 million (£3.4 million).
