Thomas Schaaf has quit as Eintracht Frankfurt manager and blamed the club’s board for making him leave after only one season in charge of the Bundesliga club.
Frankfurt finished the season in ninth place and played entertaining football, but Schaaf reportedly lost the support of most members of the board and the players because of a perceived lack of communication.
Schaaf, who had a year remaining on his current contract, hit out at the club after resigning, saying he cannot accept the "incredible and incomprehensible accusations and insinuations" about him and his work made by club officials.
The 54-year-old joined Frankfurt after a year’s sabbatical following 14 years in charge of Werder Breman where he also spent his entire playing career.
Board chairman Heribert Bruchhagen had been the only one to publicly back Schaaf and said he regretted that Schaaf was leaving.
Bruchhagen said on the club’s website: "Thomas Schaaf achieved all the goals we had set before the season reaching spot nine in the standings and 43 points.
“The collaboration was good which we repeatedly confirmed in his direction but also towards the media over the recent days.
“We regret that Thomas Schaaf will not proceed building the future of our club. Up until the end we tried to convince him otherwise and we have not been in talks with other managers.
“We wish Thomas Schaaf all the best for his future; and we will now look into finding a successor."
Schaaf was the second Bundesliga coach to quit Tuesday after Roberto Di Matteo stepped down at Schalke.
