Struggling Bundesliga side VFL Bochum have agreed a deal to sign Turkey international Fatih Akyel.

The defender, who cancelled his contract with Fenerbahce earlier this month, will link up with Bochum on New Year's Day.

Akyel has concurred on terms with Bochum until June 2007 and he will officially sign for the club when the transfer window reopens.

The 26-year-old is relishing the prospect of playing in Die Bundesliga and is eager to reward Bochum for their faith in his ability.

"Die Bundesliga is one of the top leagues in Europe and Bochum are a football club with a very good perspective and an exemplary infrastructure," Akyel told the club's official website.

"I am pleased they have shown confidence in me and I will do everything to pay that back with good achievements."

Bochum currently languish in the relegation zone and coach Peter Neururer is hoping his new signing will help to keep the club in the top flight.

Neururer said: "Fatih is an international class defender. I am sure that he can only help us in the current situation."
