The 28-year-old Slovenian international stopper has put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal at the Ruhrstadion and will move on a free transfer.
Bochum coach Peter Neururer expressed his delight at the capture of a quality centre half to replace the Bremen-bound Frank Fahrenhorst.
Neururer said: ǣTo me he's one of the best defenders in Europe and we are proud that he will join us.
"Aleksander Knavs is regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe and we think he will be ideal to fill the gap left by Frank Fahrenhorst."
Knavs is Bochum's fourth new signing for the coming season following Tommy Bechmann, Filip Trojan and Zvjezdan Misimovic, as Neururer attempts to build on the success of this season that could yet see unfashionable Bochum qualifying for Europe.
Knavs' contract with Kaiserslautern will end in June and his decision to leave the Red Devils on a Bosman free transfer could be the beginning of a mass exodus from the cash-strapped Betzenberg club.
