Dutch playmaker returns to the Bundesliga on three-year deal

Rafael van der Vaart has returned to Hamburg on a three-year contract, with the club confirming that a deal has been completed with Tottenham. It appeared at one stage as though a transfer which had been mooted for much of the summer would fail to materialise, with discussions regarding a suitable fee proving to be a sticking point. Hamburg have, however, put an offer to Spurs which they deem to be acceptable for a man who has spent the last two years at White Hart Lane. The agreement to take the Holland international back to Germany is believed to have been partly financed by a local investor, with Hamburg pulling out all the stops to re-sign a man still held in high regard at the AOL Arena.

Strong addition

Van der Vaart spent three productive years with Hamburg between 2005 and 2008, before securing a high-profile switch to Real Madrid. He is now back in the Bundesliga, with a medical having been passed and personal terms thrashed out. "I am delighted that Rafael van der Vaart will be playing for Hamburg again," coach Thorsten Fink told the club's official website. "He will be a strong addition to our team."
