Hamburg defender Guy Demel will be out of action for three months after picking up a thigh injury.
The Ivory Coast star is the latest in a long line of injury victims at the AOL Arena this season, as Hamburg struggle to make an impact on the Bundesliga season.
Demel had been hoping to return to first team action after a three-match suspension when Hamburg entertain Schalke this weekend, but a torn tendon has now put paid to his plans.
"Of course it's annoying, but after consultation with the HSV medical staff we have decided that surgery is the best option," he told Hamburg's official website.
"Surgery is necessary to prevent the muscle losing strength in the future," Hamburg doctor Oliver Dierk added.
