Hamburg have clinched the signing of Dutch international Joris Mathijsen from AZ Alkmaar.
Mathijsen will help fill the void left by the departure of fellow Dutchman Khalid Boulahrouz to Chelsea.
The former Willem II defender turned down a new deal at AZ and the club decided to cash-in on the powerful stopper.
The 26-year-old has inked a four-year deal at Hamburg after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms.
AZ issued a statement on the transfer, which read: "AZ had to make a difficult comparison between the pros and cons, between the sporting ambitions of the club and the personal ambitions of Joris.
"After consulting the technical staff, the board and considering the direction of the club, we decided to grant Joris his transfer."
