US international Steven Cherundolo will be forced to rest for at least six weeks after suffering a knee injury while representing his country in the 3-1 quarter final win over Jamaica at the Gold Cup.

A bad foul meant that the 26-year-old had to limp off early and, initially, it had been feared that the talented right back had torn cruciate ligaments, an injury he suffered in May 2000.

The Hannover star will now miss the start of the Bundesliga season in August, but 96ers managing director Ilja Kaenzig was relieved that Cherundolo's injury was not as serious as previous reports had suggested.

"Thank God he had not torn cruciate ligaments and now we hope that he will be ready to play in September," declared Kaenzig.

With Cherundolo unable to help United States in their semi-final against Honduras, the player is expected to fly back to Germany in midweek.
