Markus Babbel: Had six months remaining on his contract

Hertha Berlin have parted company with manager Markus Babbel after an argument developed over the weekend.

Accusations of lies had been exchanged between the two parties before the 39-year-old was released with immediate effect.

Babbel had six months remaining on his contract, but had been delaying any decision regarding a possible extension and he had been linked with Bayern Munich.

"After the developments of the last two days, culminating in the fact that I was called a liar more than once, both the club and I are left with no choice," said Hertha director of sport Michael Preetz when he announced the sacking.

"The relationship of trust is no longer there."

Opinion

Having taken over as Hertha coach before last season with his team in the second division, former Liverpool player Babbel promptly guided them back to the Bundesliga.

But he recently insisted he had told Hertha in November he would be leaving, despite the club being adamant they were only informed last Tuesday.

Babbel insisted he was telling the truth, as he said: "Anyone who knows me will know that if I say something, then that it is so.

"If someone has a different opinion, then he may not be listening."

Preetz was quick to hit back, as he explained: "I didn't hear anything (from him) and I have no problem with my ears. The whole thing is extremely annoying."
