Schalke moved up to fourth in the Bundesliga thanks to a 3-1 win over Augsburg, while Hamburg overcame Nurnberg.
Klaas Jan Huntelaar fired Schalke in front in the 16th minute, but Sascha Molders levelled straight after the break.
Christian Fuchs restored Schalke's advantage soon after before Raul wrapped things up late on.
The defeat leaves Augsburg rooted to the bottom of the table, while Schalke are just three points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
Hamburg climbed clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table with a 2-0 win over Nurnberg at the HSV-Arena.
Goals in each half from Jose Paolo Guerrero (23) and Marcell Jansen (62) were enough to give Hamburg the points and move them up to 11th spot in the table.
The win stretched Hamburg's unbeaten reign as coach of Hamburg to seven games to lift them three points clear of the drop zone.
