Bundesliga: Stefan Kiessling calls for Bayer Leverkusen to be more ruthless

Striker Stefan Kiessling has called on his Bayer Leverkusen side to become more ruthless in front of goal after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday.

Hakan Calhanoglu gave Leverkusen an 18th-minute lead at the BayArena, but Roel Brouwers drew Monchengladbach level just before half-time as the sides moved up to third and fourth respectively, with 24 points from their 15 Bundesliga matches.

Leverkusen had their fair share of chances to find a winner in the second half but in the end they were forced to settle for a point, prompting Kiessling to demand they become more clinical in attack.

"If you look at the chances, then I think it was fair as they had good opportunities on the break, but I think we did more in the game, so a 1-1 at home is not enough," he told the official Bundesliga website.

"We were punished because we weren't able to put the result in the bag when we were clearly superior.

"We've had this problem all season and if we knew how to resolve it, we would have done that by now."

Midfielder Simon Rolfes shared his team-mate's belief that Leverkusen should have registered three points against Lucien Favre's side.

"I think Gladbach did well on the break, but we dominated," he said.

"We put them under far more pressure, but in the end it was a very good game from both sides and, unfortunately, we only came away with a 1-1 draw.

"You've got to try to put the result beyond any doubt when you're dominating so much. We were unfortunate to concede and that irritated us, but we collected ourselves and got back in control in the second half.

Monchengladbach midfielder Patrick Herrmann felt the result was an accurate reflection of how the match unfolded.

"I think there were chances at either end and it was a super game, and I think a draw's fair," he said.

"I exchanged passes well with Max [Kruse] and he put me in on goal so it was annoying I missed the target.

"When Leverkusen put you under pressure, you've got to free yourself and it took us a while to do that."

Leverkusen are back in Bundesliga action on Wednesday when they travel to Hoffenheim, while Monchengladbach host Werder Bremen.
