Bayer Leverkusen are hoping to secure Sidney Sam on a new contract, but will not be held to ransom.

Sam currently has 18 months left on his contract, but has a clause which allows him to leave Leverkusen for £2.1million at the end of the season.

He has been linked with Premier League title challengers Liverpool, but reports in Germany recently claimed the 25-year-old had all but agreed to join Schalke.

However, Leverkusen have not given up hope of keeping the Germany international and are keen to agree a new deal with the forward, who has scored seven goals in 13 Bundesliga appearances this season.

"We are aware of the contract situation of Sidney Sam," Leverkusen chairman Michael Schade told BILD.

"We would like to sign a new contract with him to ensure he stays at this club for more years to come.

"However, not at any price. This is a fact."
