Wolfgang Holzhauser: Leverkusen chief believes the club has bought an outstanding player in Daniel Carvajal
Bayer Leverkusen have announced the signing of 20-year-old defender Daniel Carvajal from Real Madrid on a five-year deal.
Carvajal was unable to break into the first team at the Bernabeu but was part of the Spain Under 19 squad that won the European Championship last year.
The right-back, who has signed for an undisclosed fee, will hope for more opportunities at Leverkusen as the club prepare for a busy season in the Bundesliga and the Europa League.
"We have managed to strengthen ourselves in the position of right-back with this transfer," said Leverkusen chief executive Wolfgang Holzhauser.
"Daniel Carvajal is already an outstanding player but still has immense potential due to his young age."
Holzhauser also revealed that although Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho allowed the youngster to leave, he still believes Leverkusen are acquiring a quality player.
"Mourinho recommended Carvajal highly," he told the Express in Germany.
"He thinks a lot of the boy, but also said that he could continue to perform at another club. In real terms, he's behind Sergio Ramos and Alvaro Arbeloa. With us, he can continue to perform."
