Huub Stevens' reign as Hamburg boss kicked off in disappointing fashion as Hertha Berlin came from behind to claim a 2-1 win.
Thomas Doll was axed with the club rooted to the foot of the table, but the change of management did not bring about an immediate improvement.
Things started well for Hamburg as Frank Rost saved a penalty from Marco Pantelic on 15 minutes and later in the half Alexander Laas fired them in front.
However, Hertha rallied and late goals from Arne Friedrich and Mineiro left Stevens with much to ponder.
Hannover followed their midweek romp over Hertha Berlin with a 4-1 win at Alemannia Aachen.
Chavdar Yankov set them on their way with a goal on six minutes and a second from Jan Rosenthal handed Hannover a cushion.
Aurel Reghecampf netted from the penalty spot to bring Aachen back into the game, but another spot kick from Szabolcs Huszti put the visitors back in the driving seat and a late goal from Jiri Stajner sealed the victory.
Goals in either half from Frederico Insua and Marcell Jansen earned struggling Borussia Monchengladbach a vital 2-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld.
Two goals from Mike Hanke helped Wolfsburg on their way to a 3-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayer twice levelled through Steffan Kiessling and an own goal from Peter van der Heyden, but a strike 17 minutes from time by Diego Klimowicz sealed victory for Wolfsburg.
The games between Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz and Energie Cottbus and Bochum ended goalless.
