Beckenbauer says it would make sense to bring in striker

Werder Bremen's Claudio Pizarro took a step closer to making an emotional return to Bayern Munich after honorary president Franz Beckenbauer backed his signing. The Peru striker found the net 71 times before moving to Chelsea in 2007 where he found his chances limited.

Record breaker

His goalscoring touch returned, though, when he went back to Germany in 2009 and he has gone on to become the highest scoring foreigner in Bundesliga history breaking the previous record of 133 set by Giovane Elber. But the 33-year-old contract rebel has stalled on a new deal at Werder Bremen and has hinted at rejoining the German giants. And with Ivica Olic leaving at the end of the season and Nils Petersen failing to set the scoring charts alight, the veteran striker is the obvious choice according to Beckenbauer. "I have read about Pizarro and he is still one of the best," he said. "Even at the age of 33. "The goals he scores, the way he moves - there is no sign of age there. In my eyes it would make sense to sign Claudio."
