Werder Bremen say Peru international striker Claudio Pizarro will miss this summer's Copa America due to a knee injury.
The 32-year-old sustained the knock training with his national team ahead of the summer tournament which kicks off next month.
Werder general manager Klaus Allofs confirmed the injury, although the club are awaiting the final word from specialists before establishing his recovery time.
It is feared the striker will require six weeks on the sidelines, but Allofs insists the severity of the knee injury is yet to be ascertained.
"Claudio Pizarro has sustained a ligament injury in his right knee," said Allofs.
"He certainly won't be playing in the Copa America. He'll also be unavailable for us for some parts of pre-season.
"We'll decide in the next couple of days how to treat this injury. Then we'll see how serious it turns out to be."
