Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld's delight at watching his side snatch a late draw at Milan was tempered considerably by the news Willy Sagnol could be out for the rest of the season.
The French right-back was replaced after 68 minutes by Christian Lell and the early diagnosis does not look positive for the influential defender.
At the time of his withdrawal Bayern were trailing 1-0 but the game finished 2-2 courtesy of Daniel van Buyten's second goal in injury time, which cancelled out Kaka's hotly disputed penalty for the home side.
Bayern are now likely to be installed as favourites to claim a semi-final berth, with the second leg seeing them take on their Italian counterparts with parity on home soil, but they will have to do so without Sagnol.
"He's got a serious meniscus injury," confirmed Hitzfeld said.
"In the next few days he will undergo an operation and in all probability he won't be able to play for us again this season."
