Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld hailed Daniel Van Buyten after the defender scored twice in the 2-2 UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Milan.

The Belgian defender had been the subject of fierce criticism for his lack of understanding with fellow centre-back Lucio and Hitzfeld was pleased that the Hamburg recruit finally proved his critics wrong.

"Daniel had been slammed heavily and I talked to him a lot recently. He has improved in recent weeks and I am very happy for him that he scored our goals," said Hitzfeld, who admitted that Milan had been the dominant force for much of the game.

"Milan had been the better side for large parts of the match and especially in the opening 20 minutes they played with a high tempo.

"I didn't want to open up too early in order to avoid Kaka getting too much space, because he is at his best when coming from behind and using his speed.

"However, you could tell that Milan couldn't keep the pace up during the second half as they got tired.

"Towards the end of the match they were almost knocked out and we increased the pressure and pressed forward in great numbers.

"This is a good result, an important result as we scored twice away from home and we are now in a very good position for the second leg."
