Bundesliga leaders Wolfsburg are closing in on the signing of Belgian international Peter van der Heyden, according to reports in Germany.

The Club Brugge ace reportedly turned down the chance to extend his spell with the Blue and Blacks last week and appears thrilled by the prospect of a move to Die Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg's Belgian coach Erik Gerets appears to be the decisive factor in a deal that is likely to take place next summer when 28-year-old van der Heyden will be a free agent.

Despite Patrick Weiser's mature displays in the left back role this season, ex-Brugge boss Gerets is clear that van der Heyden is his preferred option.

Whilst both parties remain tight-lipped about the state of negotiations, it is believed one consequence of The Wolves' pursuit of van der Heyden is their interest in lost son Tobias Rau has cooled.

The Wolves had - unsuccessfully - tried to lure Rau back to the Volkswagen-Arena on several occasions.

"If the deal with Van der Heyden will go through, we won't repeat our attempts (to sign Rau) again," declared Wolfsburg director Klaus Fuchs.

Since his transfer from Wolfsburg two years ago, a mixture of injuries and poor form has seen former German international Rau fail to settle in Bayern Munich's star-studded squad.
