Bayern Munich have confirmed reports that they are closing in on the signing of Brazilian World Cup winner Lucio from Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen.

It is thought that Lucio has a clause in his contract with Leverkusen that allows him to leave for a transfer fee of ‚é¼15 million and the tall defender and Bayern are ready to trigger that clause with a ‚é¼15 million offer.

The move would make Lucio Bayern's second most expensive signing following Roy Makaay's ‚é¼18.5 million move from Deportivo La Coruna last summer.

Bayern have beaten off interest from a host of clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea to the classy defender's signature.

"We have found a common basis with the player and Leverkusen," confirmed Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on German TV.

The Bavarian giants are expected to tie up the deal in the next few hours, but they will first carefully study the results of the medical the 26-year-old underwent as Lucio has been plagued by knee problems, which have forced him to rest once in a while over the past weeks.

"If the medical results are okay, there's a very good chance that Lucio will join us," added Rummenigge.

Bayern's team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt has already examined the player and only his veto seems to be able to block his move to Munich.
