BAYERN MUNICH supremo Franz Beckenbauer has urged his club to keep unsettled striker Giovane Elber until 2004.

The 31-year-old was top scorer in last season's Bundesliga but has recently lost his first-team status after the signing of Roy Makaay from Deportivo La Coruna and the excellent form of Claudio Pizarro.

He was linked with a move to Monaco but rejected the chance to move to Le Championnat, and had stated that he wanted to remain at the club and fight for his place in the side.

But recently the Brazilian has stressed that he wants to leave the Bundesliga champions even before his contract expires next summer.

However, Beckenbauer believes that he should remain at the club at least until the end of the season.

"We certainly don't have too many players up front," he said. "Mehmet Scholl is not fit enough for a whole season and Roque Santa Cruz is prone to injuries, which means that we only have three strikers and we need each of them.

"I believe that Elber should stay with us until the end of the season."
