Switzerland international Marco Streller has returned to Basel, after a frustrating spell with German champions Stuttgart.

The 26-year-old striker moved to the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion at the start of 2004, but failed to nail down a regular starting role with the club under coach Armin Veh last season.

He was loaned out to FC Cologne during the second half of the season as a result, and has been linked with a move to FC Nurnberg in recent weeks.

Despite interest from a number of Bundesliga sides, the front man approached Stuttgart general manager Horst Heldt about a return to his hometown club.

"Marco really wanted to move to Basel and asked us for permission to leave," Heldt said. "We have managed to find a solution that can be accepted by all parties."

Streller now returns to Switzerland, as he looks to shore up his spot in Kobi Kuhn's squad for their Euro 2008 campaign.

Heldt, 37, has pledged his future to the club meanwhile, after signing a new four year contract to continue where he left off with Veh last season.
