VfB Stuttgart defender Martin Stranzl has been ruled out for three weeks with a knee injury.
The news is a blow to the German side's hopes of progressing in the Uefa Cup as they will have to do without their talented defender for the game with Middlesbrough.
The Germans travel to The Riverside looking to overcome a 2-1 deficit from the first leg in order to progress to the last 16 of the competition.
Stranzl pulled a muscle in his knee earlier in the week and will be required to rest for three weeks.
The Austria international will also miss Stuttgart's difficult Bundesliga trip to Hamburg as well as the home tie with struggling Kaiserslautern.
