Stuttgart thumped Beveren 5-1 to get their Group G campaign off to a flying start.

The German league leaders broke the deadlock after just nine minutes with Cacau finding the net.

German international Kevin Kuranyi doubled the lead five minutes before the break to put Stuttgart in total control.

Cacau grabbed his second seven minutes after the interval to put the game beyond Beveren.

Philip Lahm got in the scoring act with the fourth on 76 minutes.

Ndri Romaric netted a consolation for the Belgian side four minutes from time, but Imre Szabics completed the rout with the fifth deep into injury time to seal a good night's work for Matthias Sammer's men.

Benfica got off to a winning start with a 4-2 triumph over Dutch side Heerenveen.

Defender Manuel Dos Santos opened the scoring with a 14th-minute lob and Portugal international Nuno Gomes volleyed Benfica into a 2-0 lead.

But Heerenveen drew level with two goals in six second-half minutes from Ugur Yildirim and Jan Huntelaar, who scored a penalty.

Benfica substitute Karades restored his side's lead and Gomes completed a brace to seal victory.
