Germany's Football Federation expects Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker to miss Saturday's trip to Bayern Munich after sustaining a broken eye socket.
The giant centre-back suffered the injury in Germany's 6-1 victory over Azerbaijan on Tuesday night in Euro 2012 qualifying Group A.
Mertesacker was taken off in the 11th minute and an X-ray later revealed the full extent of the injury to leave the DFB pessimistic over his chances of making the trip to defending Bundesliga champions Bayern.
"The 25-year-old, as things stand at the moment, will miss the Bundesliga match against Bayern on Saturday," the DFB said in a statement.
Mertesacker is set to undergo further medical checks in Bremen on Wednesday, but it is not expected that he will need surgery.
