Mohamed Zidan's return to Bundesliga strugglers Mainz 05 has been put on ice due to concerns over Werder Bremen strikers Aaron Hunt and Ivan Klasnic.
Earlier this week, Egyptian striker Zidan looked set to sign a loan deal with Mainz, where he enjoyed a successful spell in 2005-06, but Werder are sweating over the fitness of Hunt and Klasnic and have placed the deal on the back burner.
"We have to act in the best interest of Werder and haven't made a final decision about Zidan's future yet," declared director of sport Klaus Allofs.
Werder coach Thomas Schaaf is currently left with only Miroslav Klose and Hugo Almeida as striking options, as youngster Hunt has not yet overcome his knee problems, while Croatian international Klasnic had to undergo an appendix operation.
As it remains unclear when the duo will be able to return to match action, Bremen look set to keep hold of Zidan.
Werder, meanwhile, are rumoured to be close to sealing a deal for Peter Niemeyer, after the defender confirmed he would be moving on from Dutch side Twente at the end of the season.
