Bundesliga leaders Werder Bremen were held at home by high-flying Energie Cottbus on Saturday.
Cottbus looked as though they could snatch victory at the Weser Stadion as Francis Kioyo (pictured) scored just after the break.
However, with 14 minutes left Croatian star Ivan Klasnic levelled for Werder to secure a share of the spoils.
With both Bayern and Schalke playing on Sunday, that allowed Stuttgart to climb into second with a comprehensive 4-1 success at Alemannia Aachen.
The visitors were in control early on as goals from Mario Gomez (24) and Thomas Hitzlsperger (26) put them 2-0 ahead.
Sascha Rosler (28) gave Alemannia some brief hope but it was only short-lived as Marco Streller's double secured the points for VfB, with Vedad Ibisevic adding nothing more than another consolation late on for the home side.
Hertha Berlin are third following their 2-1 win over Nurnberg - their first defeat of the season.
The hero for the capital side was Marko Pantelic - whose double (29 & 66) sandwiched Ivica Banovic's (47) goal and gave them the victory.
Borussia Dortmund left it very late to claim a 1-1 draw with Arminia Bielefeld at the Signal Iduna Park.
Artur Wichniarek's 68th minute strike looked to be enough for the visitors - but tragedy struck in the final minute when Petr Gabriel was dismissed for a professional foul - he also gave away a penalty which Alexander Frei dispatched.
Mainz remain second from bottom despite claiming a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen.
Imre Szabics (29) put Mainz ahead but Sergei Barbarez struck on the stroke of half time to make sure the match ended all square. Marco Rose was sent off late on for Mainz, but they held on for the point.
Wolfsburg eased away from the wrong end of the table with a 1-0 win over Hamburg. The only goal came after 19 minutes through Mike Hanke.
