Germany striker Miroslav Klose is facing a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup finals after damaging his shoulder on Wednesday.

Werder Bremen crashed out of the DFB Pokal at the hands of lowly St Pauli on Wednesday and their woes were compounded by an injury to the Bundesliga's leading scorer.

Klose went down under a challenge and emerged with an injury to his right shoulder, with coach Thomas Schaaf fearing a lengthy lay-off.

"He could be out for three months," said Schaaf.

Klose is a major doubt for Werder's UEFA Champions League meetings with Juventus, but should make Jurgen Klinsmann's World Cup squad provided he suffers no setbacks.

The conditions were treacherous following a heavy snow fall and Werder boss Schaaf was unhappy with the decision to even play the game.

"If you just want to have fun you can play in these conditions but if you're being serious you can't," added Schaaf.
