Hertha Berlin bosses Dieter Hoeness and Falko Gotz have blamed referee Lutz Wagner for their 2-1 loss to Werder Bremen on Saturday.

Two late Bremen goals condemned the Berlin side to defeat at the Olympiastadion, but Hertha believe they should have been awarded a penalty earlier in the second half, when goalkeeper Andreas Reinke brought down Yildiray Basturk.

"Of course we are very angry with the ref. Reinke fouled Basturk and it should have been a penalty. We could have gone 2-0 up and the game would have been safe," coach Gotz despaired.

General manager Hoeness agreed, adding: "That was a game of the very highest quality, but the referee's performance simply didn't match it.

"Wagner not only missed the penalty shout, but also disallowed a goal by Hertha striker Marco Pantelic for apparent offside," claimed Hoeness.

"There were 15 or 20 other inconclusive situations where the referee blew in favour of Bremen."
