Euro 2004 star Angelos Charisteas is expected to sign for Ajax this week, after the Dutch giants struck a deal with the Greek international and his club Werder Bremen.

Ajax chief Ronald Koeman has been scouring the market for a powerful striker he believes can pep up his attack in the second half of the season.

The likes of Borussia Dortmund's Jan Koller and West Brom front-man Kanu had been put forward as options, but Koeman had trained his sights on Charisteas.

The Dutchman initiated contact following Greece's clash with Kazakhstan, at which point Charisteas confirmed his interest in moving to Amsterdam.

With Charisteas only a bit-part player at Werder despite his Euro 2004 exploits, the German champions opted to cash in and agreed a deal with Ajax.

It is believed that Ajax have shelled out in the region of ‚é¼5 million for the 24-year-old, with the money coming from the summer sale of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Juventus.

Charisteas is believed to have already agreed terms with Ajax, with only a medical standing between the angular striker and a three-and-a-half year deal.

Ajax have found some form of late and Koeman will hope the arrival of Charisteas can carry them to a successful title defence.

The move could signal the end for Wesley Sonck at Ajax, with the Belgian international set to fall further down the pecking order.

Youngster Ryan Babel and Yannis Anastasiou are expected to vie for the starting berth alongside Charisteas, leaving Sonck out in the cold.
