Bayer go top in Germany

Stuttgart's unbeaten record continued with an assured 3-1 win at Werder Bremen, but Bayer Leverkusen moved top of Die Bundesliga with a 4-1 victory at Hertha Berlin.

Imre Szabics and Kevin Kuranyi were the scourges of Manchester United in the Champions League and they repeated the dose at Werder.

Werder briefly gave themselves hope when Angelos Charisteas netted on the hour, but Christain Tiffert secured the points with a last minute goal.

Bayer Leverkusen continue to confound their critics and they moved top of the tree with a 4-1 win at Hertha Berlin.

Franca's early goal handed Bayer the advantage but Fredi Bobic levelled just after the interval. Bayer regrouped and goals by Dimitar Berbatov, Bernd Schneider and Marko Babic handed them the three points.

Both teams finished with ten men as Denis Lapaczinski and Diego Placente were sent off in separate incidents for Hertha and Bayer respectively.

Borussia Dortmund are beginning to show some form and they proved far too strong for Hannover, running out impressive 6-2 winners.

Hannover held their own for over half an hour, but two goals in a seven minute spell before the break by Ewerthon and Lars Ricken killed off the visitors' spirit.

Sebastien Kehl added a third shortly after the restart and although Vinicius Bergantin briefly reduced the arrears, Jan Koller added a fourth for BVB.

Ewerthon and Koller took their personal tallies to two to hand Borussia a 6-2 win.

1860 Munich and Cologne both left it late before securing 1-0 wins over Eintracht Frankfurt and Freiburg respectively. Benjamin Lauth was the hero for 1860 with a last minute penalty, while Cologne's winner came from Mustafa Dogan on 70 minutes.

Ottmar Hitzfeld's Bayern Munich had to settle for a point from their trip to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Wolfsburg heaped more misery on struggling Hansa Rostock with a 3-1 win. Diego Klimowicz netted the opener, which was added to by a brace from Fernando Baiano - meaning Rene Rydlewicz's strike was nothing more than a consolation for Hansa.
