Jermaine Jones will be allowed to leave Schalke this month after being told he will not be offered a new contract.
The 32-year-old United States international midfielder was left at home as Schalke flew to Qatar for a winter training camp.
Jones is now looking at his options, after Schalke confirmed he was not part of their plans.
General manager Horst Heldt told Deutsche Presseagentur: "Jermaine (Jones) and I were talking on the phone between Christmas and New Year. That was when I told him we would not sign a new contract with him at the end of this season.
"He has asked me to stay at home to consider his options and there are several clubs interested in him, still we have not yet received anything concrete. But the transfer window has just started."
Jones has been strongly linked with a move to England, where he spent the early part of 2011 when he impressed during a loan spell with Blackburn Rovers.
