Schalke forged six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga as Werder Bremen lost at Stuttgart.

After a tight first half at home to Hertha Berlin, Schalke made the breakthrough on 64 minutes when Kevin Kuranyi scored.

The 2-0 success was secured 15 minutes from time when former Rangers striker Peter Lovenkrands found the net.

Bremen travelled to third-placed Stuttgart aiming to keep pace with Schalke, only to be crushed 4-1.

Robert Hilbert put Stuttgart in front on three minutes and Mario Gomez added a second on 17 minutes.

Diego pulled one back five minutes later, only for Michael Langel to score on 34 minutes. Marco Streller grabbed Stuttgart's fourth on 86 minutes.

Bottom club Hamburg recorded just a second win of the Bundesliga season after a 3-0 home triumph over Borussia Dortmund.

Rafael van der Vaart converted an 11th minute penalty and Collin Benjamin netted on 39 minutes.

Dortmund had Dede sent off three minutes before half-time and Mehdi Mahdavikia scored Hamburg's third of the afternoon in the final minute.

Mainz moved out of the bottom three as Mohamed Zidan bagged a hat-trick in a 4-1 thumping of Energie Cottbus.

Leon Andreasen put Mainz ahead on eight minutes, but Cottbus levelled on 20 minutes through Sergei Radu.

Zidan restored Mainz's lead two minutes later and tucked away a penalty on 39 minutes. He completed his hat-trick on 61 minutes.

Borussia Monchengladbach and Alemannia Aachen occupy places in the drop zone after a 0-0 draw.

Stefan Kiessling poached an injury-time equaliser for Bayer Leverkusen in a 2-2 draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt as both teams finished with 10 men.

Bayer keeper Hans-Jorg Butt was sent off on 28 minutes, but the hosts took the lead when Jermaine Jones put through his own net on 39 minutes.

Eintracht levelled two minutes later through Sotirios Kyrgiakos before having Christoph Spycher dismissed 10 minutes from time.

Alexander Meier put the away side in front six minutes from time before Kiessling's late intervention secured Bayer a point.
