Gladbach keen on Altintop

Schalke have confirmed that Borussia Monchengladbach are keen on Hamit Altintop.

Schalke have confirmed reports that former coach Jupp Heynckes is keen to lure Turkish international Hamit Altintop to Borussia Monchengladbach.

The contract of the 23-year-old ends in summer 2007 and, with talks about a new deal at the Veltins-Arena appearing to have stalled, Schalke's managing director revealed that The Foals have an eye on the midfielder.

"We are in no rush and if Hamit does no longer want to play for a top club or is afraid of strong competition, he could go to Gladbach," insisted Andreas Muller.

Altintop joined The Royal Blues three years ago from lowly Wattenscheid and quickly rose to prominence during his debut season, but has failed to win a permanent starting place ever since.

The summer signing of his twin-brother Halil from Kaiserslautern caused hope that the highly-gifted midfielder would finally live up to his full potential.

But he has failed to become a leading figure in Mirko Slomka's team and could be tempted to try his luck elsewhere if his status does not change in the near future.
