Schalke defender Christian Pander will be out of action for six months after a knee operation.

The 21-year-old left back damaged his knee cap and ligaments during the 3-0 loss at Stuttgart earlier this month and underwent an operation earlier this week..

"The operation went well, but we have to reckon with a six-month break," doctor Rolf Walter said.

Pander's injury comes as a serious blow to Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick, as he attempts to get his team back on championship course.

Better news for Rangnick is that striker Ebbe Sand is fit breaking his nose against Nurnberg two weeks ago.
