Schalke have revealed Argentinian defender Anibal Matellan is leaving the club and he could rejoin former side Boca Juniors.

Matellan, who is currently recovering from an Achilles tendon injury, asked to be released from his contract in Gelsenkirchen after falling down the pecking order.

He joined Schalke from Boca in 2001 but he has failed to persuade present coach Jupp Heynckes to make him a regular in the team.

The summer arrivals of Mladen Krstajic from Werder Bremen and Marcelo Bordon from Stuttgart further emphasised Matellan's plight at the Arena AufSchalke.

The 27-year-old is now returning to his homeland where he has an offer to link up with Boca again, despite coach Carlos Bianchi leaving his position over the weekend.

"We have been having conversations with Matellan for a few weeks so, despite Bianchi deciding to leave, I suppose that he will come anyway because he doesn't have a place in Schalke," said Boca board member Jose Beraldi.

Though Boca will be favourites to re-sign Matellan, the defender is understood to have other offers in the Argentinian top flight.
